Plaque Psoriasis

The single most common form of Psoriasis is Plaque Psoriasis. It affects 80 to 90% of people with Psoriasis. Plaque Psoriasis is also known as Psoriasis Vulgaris, which means Common Psoriasis.

Although Plaque Psoriasis can occur at any age most people who have Plaque Psoriasis develop the condition in their 20s. Plaque Psoriasis shows very little regard to sex or race, affecting males and females from all races with no significant difference.

The most common areas for Plaque Psoriasis are on the areas of the body with excess skin or folds, such as the lower back, elbows, arms, legs, knees and shoulders. The scalp is also commonly affected by Plaque Psoriasis.

Plaque Psoriasis effects the skin by turning it red and scaly with silvery white scales. These plaques usually have a very well defined border. Plaques are persistent and tend not to disappear for years.

Often these red areas (or plaques) can cover large areas of the body. Where the plaques are located on the body can sometimes change how they appear. For instance, when the plaque is located on an area of the body with thicker skin, such as the soles of the feet or the palms of the hands, they can be scaly but are often not very red. If the plaques are in areas which tend to get moist or sweaty, such as the buttocks or creases of the knees and armpits there is often minimal noticeable scaling.
