Psoriasis is a condition of the scalp or body characterized by irritation, itching, redness and extreme excess shedding of dead epidermal cells. It is a chronic, autoimmune genetic disease and occurs when the immune system accelerates the normal growth cycle of skin cells. This accelerated process of skin regeneration causes a buildup of dead skin cells which then appear as raised red patches (often called lesions) that itch, crack and bleed.
Psoriasis can occur on any part of the body including the scalp, knees, elbows, face and torso and can be a debilitating disease with physical and emotional consequences affecting health and quality of life.
Psoriasis can range from mild to moderate to severe and disabling. Psoriasis sufferers have an increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetics, depression and other serious health conditions.
